義経が牛若といって鞍馬にあった頃、同じ源氏の血をうけて十八公麿（まつまろ）（親鸞）は生れた。平家全盛の世、落ちぶれ藤家（とうけ）の倅として育った彼は、平家一門のだだっ子寿童丸の思うままの乱暴をうけた。彼は親鸞に生涯つきまとう悪鬼である。9歳で得度を許された親鸞の最初の法名は範宴。師の慈円僧正が新座主となる叡山へのぼった範宴を待っていたのは、俗界以上の汚濁であった。
