第２次世界大戦のさなか、リトアニアの日本領事館の領事代理になった杉原千畝。ナチスによるユダヤ人迫害がひどくなる1940年の夏、日本経由で新しい土地に逃れようと、ビザを求めるユダヤ人たちが領事館に詰めかけます。千畝は悩んだ末、日本政府の方針に反し、日本通過のビザを発給し、六千人のユダヤ人の命を救いました。きびしい戦争の時代を、信念と決断力をもち命の大切さを最優先にして生きたひとりの日本人の物語です。
