新宿中村屋を創業した夫婦、相馬愛蔵とその妻・相馬黒光。宮城県仙台市の藩士の儒者・星雄記を祖父に持ち廃藩置県の４年後に生まれた星 良…のちに結婚して相馬良となり、愛蔵の故郷、安曇野郡東穂高から上京し、夫婦で本郷でパン屋を開業する傍ら、夫婦ともに文筆活動もしながら、明治、大正、昭和と続く時代の中で、様々な芸術家…画家、彫刻家、文筆家、舞台俳優などと交流し、彼らを様々な形で支援し、後に「中村屋サロン」と呼ばれた日本近代文化の一役を担うこととなる。「愛の章」は中村屋サロンの始まりともなった東穂高出身の彫刻家・荻原碌山と相馬夫婦との交流を描く。
